Wednesday, looking east up Virginia Street from McGee Street. A pretty brisk late-afternoon shower opened up just as I walked home from downtown Berkeley.

hanks, Marie. If I had any artistic skill, I suppose I’d be out there trying to paint or draw these scenes. On the other hand, what always attracts me is the quality of the light, and that’s so ephemeral that you’d have to be a master to even hint at it. “Hint at it” is all most photographs manage to do, too; I think of the shots I take as sort of visual notetaking.
